Zuckerberg defends Instagram purchase in court

Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg is currently in federal court for the second day of a significant antitrust trial in which the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) alleges that Meta has illegally monopolized the social media market. During his testimony, Mr Zuckerberg engaged in a heated exchange with FTC attorney Daniel Matheson regarding emails he wrote about acquiring Instagram. Mr Matheson argued that, prior to acquiring the firm, Mr Zuckerberg viewed Instagram as a threat, citing a message where Mr Zuckerberg described it as a “rapidly growing, threatening network.” However, Mr Zuckerberg countered that his emails were mischaracterized and emphasized his excitement about the acquisition. The trial, which could lead to Meta being forced to divest Instagram and WhatsApp, is a pivotal test of the FTC’s ability to challenge Big Tech.
